Rita Cox Dog Park

This is a petition to install an off leash dog park in Rita Cox Park. Ward 14 has only 2 off leash dog parks (Sorauren Avenue Park & Baird Park) yet liberty village has a higher resident/dog ratio than those areas. Many residents and their dogs already frequent Rita Cox park so installing a city operated off leash area is a natural progression. A progression which will keep both the dogs and children who use the playground safer. The closest city operated off leash area is a 13 minute walk away (Western Battery Road) which, granted, is not very far but it is a run not a park. The off leash run on Joe Shuster Way is not city operated, poorly maintained, there is a lack of drainage and methods of disposal which causes many dogs to get sick and, lastly, it is way too small and narrow. That space would be better used as an extension of the playground or as a gathering place considering dogs need an open space where they can run circles around one another. Rita Cox park may be small but if the space is designed and used efficiently, it could be a great gathering place for all residents. By relocating the planned covered patio we can make the park convenient and useful for all. Dogs will get a place they can run free, children can continue to use the playground and will be safer and parents/other residents can enjoy the covered patio when they want shelter from the elements.
