On Monday Nov 16 at 6pm Councilman Bonin and Chief Moore will be holding a CD11 wide town hall on public safety: https://bit.ly/CD11PublicSafetyTownHall
To be clear, this is not the town hall that we asked for. This is a CD11 wide event run entirely by CD11, not a Venice focused town hall run by the VNC as we requested. (It has also been scheduled at the same time as the Venice Coastal Plan community input meeting so Venice's participation will be further minimized).
CD11 will be choosing which pre-submitted questions they would like to answer with no ability for you to follow-up and no pushback from an objective moderator because they are running this event themselves.
That being said, this is an opportunity to ask questions and I want to make sure your questions get answered so here’s what I want you to do:
1 - Submit up to 3 questions for Monday's event on Councilman Bonin’s RSVP/Survey https://bit.ly/CD11PublicSafetyTownHall
2 - Submit the same questions to my survey https://bit.ly/382r2Sf That creates a public record of what questions were asked and what questions were not selected. I will send a list of the most frequently asked questions to CD11 and Chief Moore before the event to try and make sure they are addressed.
3 - The VNC still has a motion coming up at the Nov 17 meeting requesting the Councilman attend a VNC run public safety town hall focused on Venice. If you still want that to happen email board@venicenc.org, mike.bonin@lacity.org, nisa.kove@lacity.org, arianne.garcia@lacity.org and tell them that. Also, go to Councilman Bonin’s “Future Town Hall Ideas” Survey bit.ly/cd11townhalls and write in “Venice Town Hall run by VNC.”
5 - After the town hall, email me at VenicePublicSafety@gmail.com to tell me what you thought about the event and whether it answered your questions or whether a Venice Town Hall is still necessary. I’ll send a sampling of the responses I get to local media that night so your reaction is included in any coverage. Also tell the VNC and CD11 whether your questions were adequately answered or whether you still want a Venice Town Hall board@VeniceNC.org, mike.bonin@lacity.org, nisa.kove@lacity.org, arianne.garcia@lacity.org.
Here’s an article in The Venice Current with more details: https://thevenicecurrent.com/2020/11/bonin-says-no-to-venice-town-hall-to-hold-cd11-crime-and-public-safety-meeting-instead/
I am skeptical about an event where the Councilman gets to choose his own questions and his own moderator, but it’s going to happen whether we like it or not so I’m going to do my best to make sure your questions get asked and if the answers are not sufficient to keep pushing for a Venice focused town hall with a more objective moderator.
