Leverhulmes are pushing for the Local Plan to have a target of even more houses to be built each year. This would mean that Green Belt WILL be more likely to be built on
The Council’s draft Local Plan sets a housing target to 2037 of 890 dwellings per annum, using the standard government methodology.
Leverhulmes have released a glossy brochure in which they detail why they think there are “Very Special Circumstances” for building on Wirral’s Green Belt. They will be arguing for up to 1300 homes per year at the Local Plan Inspection.
They, and other developers, will have expensive Planning Consultants and Barristers to argue their case. They believe there are arguments to build even more houses, up to 1766 houses per year.
Wirral Green Space Alliance experts believe the real housing target should be around 4300 houses over the life time of the plan – about 285 house per year! This lower figure is backed up by the recent Office for National Statistics population figures for Wirral which show that Wirral’s population has hardly increased – just 0.1% in the last 10 years.
The Council’s and the Developers targets are widely over-inflated and this threatens our Green Belt.

Wirral Green Space Alliance are working hard to challenge the Developers at the Local Plan Inspection but we want to have expert Planning and Legal Representation to FIGHT ON YOUR BEHALF. The Developers will have their expensive planning experts and Barristers lined up – we believe the ordinary people of Wirral should also be represented. But it is VERY EXPENSIVE.
