Provide Indigenous communities clean, affordable water while their advisories are lifted
Provide Indigenous communities clean, affordable water while their advisories are lifted
The Issue
Many Indigenous peoples don’t have access to clean water on their reserves. This is a serious issue because access to clean water is a basic human right, according to Article 25 of the United Nations 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights.' Not only are Indigenous peoples being deprived of their human rights, they’re also suffering severe health issues and complications because of water. Skin diseases, like Eczema, have occured because of Indigenous peoples bathing in the unclean water. It takes a lot of time to boil the water for cooking and drinking purposes. This unacceptable way of living hasn’t been resolved yet because of the flaw in the Government's plan to fix this issue. It’s clear that this issue isn’t the government’s main priority because they’ve withheld action, such as not eliminating advisories fast enough to meet their current goal.
We want Canada’s government to ensure that Indigenous reserves are given clean water at the same prices as other Canadian communities, and that they do not have to make long or dangerous journeys to do so. We also wish to raise awareness about the needs of Indigenous communities while their water advisories are being lifted so that Canadian citizens will pressure the government to meet them.
