The island is an important reservoir of drinking water not just for Slovakia but for the whole world, big farming corporations from Denmark moved to Slovakia in 2010 due the tight regulations in they own country since the they opened up several pigfarms with different capacity from 10000 to 30000 and they spray the waste water all over to the field risking the contamination of the ground water what is in our country just below some places 5 meters, now they want to open a new farm again close to my home town Kolárovo. Please help and support  us with your signature to show them that it's not okay destroy and poison our drinking water. Veľký Žitný ostrov(Great Rye Island) (German: Große Schüttinsel or Great Schütt Island, Hungarian: Csallóköz) to differentiate it from Malý Žitný ostrov(Small Rye Island) (German: Kleine Schüttinsel or Little Schütt Island, Hungarian: Szigetköz), is a river island in southwestern Slovakia, extending from Bratislava to Komárno. It lies between the Danube, its tributary Little Danube and Váh. The island is a major part of the Danubian Flat. It is the biggest river island in Europe with an area of 1,886 square kilometres (728 square miles), being 84 kilometres (52 miles) long and 15 to 30 kilometres (9.3 to 18.6 miles) wide.

The main towns on the island are Komárno(Révkomárom), Dunajská Streda(Dunaszerdahely) and Šamorín (Somorja). The island is an important reservoir of drinking water and an agricultural region.[1]

Southern parts of Žitný ostrov by the Danube are protected by Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area.
