Only RSPO certified palm oil products at Costco

Ask Costco and Costco.com to only carry products containing RSPO certified (or equivalent) palm oil

Petitions are hot these days and I understand adding another to the list could be overwhelming. However, more and more often we are hearing about palm oil’s devastating effects on rain forests. As consumers, it is important to shop and spend money in sustainable ways, using our dollars to drive policies and production.

Costco has a Palm Oil sustainability policy, stating that by 2021 all palm oil in its Kirkland Signature products will be RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil - or equivalent) certified. This is a great step in the right direction; however, more needs to be done sooner.

I have always appreciated that Costco tends to have many organic, local, sustainably sourced products throughout the store; that their buyers tend to choose products wisely for the environment and its people; and that they pay a fair wage to their employees. However, as somewhat of a leader in corporate sustainability, Costco could do more.

I have been personally not shopping at Costco once I realized how many of the food products it carries contain palm oil. I have written to them and l know my concerns; however, I am only one person and cannot individually make much of a difference by not shopping there.

That’s where your signature and this petition comes in! Perhaps if Costco realizes that I am not the only person who desires only sustainably sourced palm oil products; or, better, (but maybe not possible for everyone), who plans to not shop there until they no longer carry these products, devastating palm oil plantations could begin to be eliminated.

Here are some links for more information:

Once rainforests are cut down and made in to palm oil plantations, the soil isn’t suited to support the diversity this ecosystem is renowned for.

Many South Pacific palm oil plantations are leading to forest fires and deforestation that is displacing numerous species, including the critically endangered Bornean orangutan.

Please help me put pressure on this international wholesale retailer to eliminate products in their stores containing non-sustainable palm oil. Perhaps by having a well-known, sustainably-minded worldwide retailer to ban it, others will follow suit and unsustainable palm oil will be a thing of the past! Additionally, Costco could actually obtain more business by supporting sustainability, as consumers desire to shop at places that benefit the common good. Every idea has to start somewhere…
