Bay Area Costco: End This Animal Cruelty

The Issue

A few years ago my sister gave me the gift of a Costco gold star membership for my birthday. Before then I had been to Costco a couple times when I was younger, but going as an adult was a completely different experience. I thought Costco was so amazing - where else can you find everything on your shopping list and a couple new things you didn’t know you needed during every single trip? On top of that, it’s SO cheap compared to other grocery stores I‘ve frequented in the past. I saw Costco as a really reputable brand, so I just chalked the prices up to the wholesale nature of the business.

Fast forward to this year, when my friend sent me this NY Times article about an undercover investigation into where Costco sources their cheap chicken. My heart breaks thinking about those birds packed together, covered in their own waste, unable to stand for the vast majority of their lives. Does Costco really think a couple dollars off the price of chicken is worth a lifetime of suffering a million times over? To make matters worse, this article came out in February, and I still haven’t heard of Costco taking any action. In fact, they referred to this practice as “normal” and “uneventful.” WHAT?

As customers of Costco we need to take a stand for what’s right and demand they end their part in these atrocious acts of large-scale animal cruelty. Please sign this petition to join me in standing up to Costco and making our voices heard.
