No Costa in Dartmouth

The Issue

Costa chain coffee shop applying for permission to open a shop in Dartmouth, 5-9 Victoria Road, Devon.

We oppose the plan because:

We already have great independent coffee shops and don't welcome the damage a large coffee shop chain company could do.

The large chain wouldn't be in keeping with the town. The historical 'Butterwalk' is 50 meters from the site. "The town contains many medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes and is a patchwork of narrow lanes and stone stairways. A significant number of the historic buildings are listed. One of the most obvious is the Butterwalk, built 1635 to 1640." with now a proposed 'Costa' sign trampling on our towns heritage.

Dartmouth would be in danger of becoming a 'clone town' where you could be in any part of uk, due to same shops on the high street, value the diversity, and don't unbalance the fragile economy.

They wouldn't involve in towns communities like other local shops. Countless other local business have given raffle prizes, time, money to local causes, it is much harder with a larger chain company to see them focus on local communities and give back to a town.

What is the true cost of Costa? letter to the editor published in the Dartmouth Chronicle newspaper. 20th oct 2016

"Does it promote choice when shopping in an independent means that 80p from every £1 you spent stays and cycles in the local community, whereas shopping in a chain, 80% of it leaves at the end of the day when they cash up?" Totnes Transition Town, No to costa Campaign.

There are already two mini Costa outlets in Spar, two doors down from proposed site and up at top, townstal garage. We don't need any more.

Please sign the petition and together lets keep Costa out of Dartmouth.
