The Issue

Petition to the Town of Oromocto, New Brunswick

Immediate Action on the Cost of Living for Fixed-Income Residents

To: Mayor and Council, Town of Oromocto

From: Residents of Oromocto

Purpose

We, the undersigned residents of Oromocto, call on the Town of Oromocto to acknowledge and address the financial strain that affects seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and all residents who live on fixed or limited incomes. Rising costs for housing, property taxes, utilities, food, transportation, and essential services create significant hardship.

Background

  1. Households relying on pensions, disability payments, and retirement savings cannot keep pace with cost increases.
  2. Local food-bank demand climbs, signaling worsening financial vulnerability.
  3. Annual municipal tax increases, without targeted relief, impact those least able to absorb extra costs.
  4. Essential services are more expensive, leaving many residents struggling to maintain a basic standard of living.

Requested Actions

  1. Introduce a Fixed-Income Property-Tax Relief Program.
  2. Cap Annual Property-Tax Increases for Vulnerable Households.
  3. Expand Community Support Programs including food, transportation, and home-energy assistance.
  4. Conduct a Public Cost-of-Living Impact Review.
  5. Establish a Cost-of-Living Advisory Committee.
