Do not expand the 1-to-1 iPad program for K-8
The Issue
Dear Corvallis School District Board of Directors and District Administrators,
We ask the Board of Directors to not fund the 1.2 million dollar 1-to-1 iPad expansion proposal for K-8 for the 2016-2017 budget year.
It is our concern that this proposal puts excessive financial resources into unproven technology and diverts critical funding from:
- Stabilizing funding for art, music, and physical education
- Improving the condition and safety of our District’s facilities
- Reducing class sizes
At the youngest ages, we believe creative play, social interaction, and guidance from teachers are the fundamental elements of learning. We believe personal 1-to-1 iPad devices distract from these paths.
We believe that great teachers and proven curriculum are the way to engage students and provide personalized support with the help of trained assistants. We believe a device should not dictate the curriculum that our children are learning.
We applaud the District's efforts to address equity, however, we believe that equity does not equate to providing electronic devices to every student.
There are eleven classroom buildings in the District at “high risk” for collapse in the event of an earthquake. Classes around the District continue to be held in portable trailers with no plan for replacement. Please prioritize a safe and comfortable learning environment above more iPads.
We ask the Corvallis School District Administration to realign their strategy to support education by providing the basic needs of students instead of 1-to-1 iPad devices. We urge them to look for affordable and innovative ways to foster critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and communication without putting kids and young adults behind a screen.
We appreciate your work and want to be a partner with the District to accomplish these goals. We understand that 1.2 million dollars annually is not sufficient to resolve all of these issues, but allocating this funding towards iPads for every student is a step in the wrong direction.
Please focus your efforts on partnering with the parents, teachers and the Corvallis community to solve these issues together.
