Save Open Space in Corvallis, Oregon

The Issue

We oppose the annexation, rezoning, and housing development of 42 acres of land in Benton County by the City of Corvallis. This proposed development, ironically named “The Preserve,” is at the northern border of the Timberhill neighborhood in NW Corvallis and abuts the McDonald Forest, Timberhill Natural Area, and Chip Ross Park. “The Preserve” literally destroys, and we are opposed because it:

-- Destroys at least 160 trees, many over 100 years old
-- Eliminates many open space paths used by hikers, cyclists, and walkers
-- Disrupts wetlands, natural waterways, and riparian zones
-- Eliminates habitat for wildlife
-- Increases fire hazard for the McDonald Forest and neighboring homes
-- Exacerbates lack of adequate emergency evacuation routes
-- Contains multiple landslide hazards and potentially unstable steep slopes

A housing development will destroy this unique, fragile ecosystem forever. The large number of housing units already approved elsewhere fulfills the City’s needs to the year 2036 (based on the City’s population projections).

THEREFORE:
The undersigned oppose the City of Corvallis annexing and rezoning for housing development of 42 acres of open space known as “The Preserve” (ANN-2021-01/ZD-2021-02/SUB-2021-04).
