We are the Residents Against Dapto Jail, and while we acknowledge a prison might bring economic and employment opportunities to some locations, they have picked the wrong spot in West Dapto!

A prison in West Dapto makes no sense.

A recent report by UDIA found that a prison would steal (that's right, take away!) 2,500 jobs from the southern Illawarra by seizing land that is currently zoned for and should be used by growing private industries and more housing.

Illawarra-south coast already accommodates more inmates per capita than Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast, North Coast and New England. We already lift above our weight!

It would threaten nearby property prices by up to 10%.

It goes against our region's vision as a city of innovation. We are a growing lifestyle and tourist region, not a jail town.

It would contradict all existing criteria set by Corrective Services NSW to plonk a jail 20 metres from new homes and in the middle of the fastest growing suburb in regional NSW.

It goes against the plans made by Premier Berejiklian for sustainable residential communities for young families across NSW.

Literally, nothing about this proposal is making any sense!

There are more suitable locations for a prison and we urge the NSW Government to stop wasting tax payer funds, to abandon this proposal and to start looking elsewhere!
