“Endless planning permission applications at Carlyon Bay today. Their plan is to build 500+ houses and leisure facilities (as I’m sure lots of this group know about, given the length of time this development has been in... Development)

Link below to what the proposed development will look like... Costa Del Carlyon by the looks of things!”

A sad open letter from a young local couple; meanwhile, back in 2016, Cornwall Council agreed, a Local Plan (2010-30) for 52,000 new houses, later raised to 60,000, so the question begs: WHO FOR?!!

London Landlords? Manchester council tenants? Birmingham tradesmen? Liverpool retirees? Anybody at the council ever thought it might be an idea to start targeting local youngsters and families?!!

“Just makes me wonder why I bother working. I’ll never afford a house here in the town both my partner and I can trace our family trees back to Looe since the 1600’s!

We both own small businesses working for ourselves; he’s a window cleaner and I get up at 5am to work at a hotel for minimum wage on a zero hours contract, finish at 12 and go and clean houses and holiday homes. Work seven-day weeks. Can’t even afford to rent privately in Looe. Thank god for my council flat. I just find this stuff so sad. Was at a clean the other day and the agent didn’t even bother taking pictures of the interior, said he’d market in London and sell it on the view alone.

A house up Hannafore lets for £3,000 a week for holidays. There’s an ex-council house in my estate for sale for nearly 1/4 of a million.

Is anyone else just sick of working their arse off to pay bills like council tax and make rich utility companies richer?

Work is not a route out of poverty. No matter how hard I work, I can’t afford to buy a place here. I honestly don’t know how I’d cope if I wasn’t lucky enough to have been in such a desperate situation years ago, that the council finally housed me. I can only imagine what a difference it’d make to so very many, if the councils actually built social housing or affordable housing that is actually affordable to people who live in the area.”

One person commented:

“Sadly, the phrase 'affordable housing' has become a euphemism for go ahead and build anywhere you like and then sell to the highest bidder regardless of where they come from. Young people (or anyone) trying to earn a living in Cornwall cannot possibly 'afford' the sort of prices developers and estate agents are asking. Lettings are no better with 100 applicants on average for every house that comes available and heavy demand from outside the Duchy fuelling rocketing rents. The housing market is broken in Cornwall and a completely new approach is sorely needed. Ensuring Cornish homes for Cornish people would be a good start - putting need before greed.”

Whilst another added pointedly:

“It’s disgraceful! Things in Cornwall have got crazy.....

More people, more traffic, more busy, more noise and the tourists and the wealthy get the best of it!

These and the fact that everything is getting more expensive there, are the reasons we left, 3 years ago and moved to Wales!

I understand where you’re coming from and it’s just not right! You should be able to buy a home there, something must be done!”

And yet another:

“I'm nearly 72 and can remember the time when we were invaded for about 6 main weeks a year, mainly the last week in July, all of August and a little of September. We accepted that. There were some visitors at Easter and Whitsun other than that, we had our lovely county to ourselves and virtually unspoiled. Now the want to invade all year. I've nothing against people having holidays but it only accounts for around 11-15% of the income yet is the cause of probably 80% plus of all the congestion the rest of us have to endure.”

Finally, the most accurate of them, that says it all:

“Bastards all!! Cornwall Council and the Developers...”

Recurring theme here, I would suggest….

A message from Cornwall Wildlife Trust

We have taken action and raised concerns about the impact on local wildlife, including protected species, and tree felling as part of unauthorised development at Carbis Bay Hotel.

As an environmental charity we have no legal powers for investigating and prosecuting wildlife crime and no statutory planning powers. We have, however, been communicating with Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council teams at several levels, who do have responsibility in these areas, to highlight the concerns for wildlife at the site. We have also been in contact with Carbis Bay Hotel and their architects.

This evening at 6pm, a Facebook Live event is being hosted by Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Council and the Cabinet Office to answer G7 summit questions. directly: https://www.facebook.com/DevonAndCornwallPolice/posts/10158883770367988

You can read a statement from us which gives further detail on the activity to date and actions we have taken since 14th March when we first reported our concerns to Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police, on our website:
