Something a little more upbeat and less corrupt about Cornwall, for a change!
New Cornish author ‘Kevin Bennetts’ has written about his life in his first book curiously entitled, ‘The Tresean Eel’.
Kevin (71) from Gwennap, Cornwall is a retired, former oil distribution company owner whose passion for the Duchy has inspired him to write about his real life experiences growing up in the place he loves and cares about deeply.
In his book, Kevin portrays a vivid history of Cornwall from his days growing up on a farm, to becoming a fisherman, a miner, construction worker and eventually running a successful company. He captures the tenacity of Cornwall’s native inhabitants who typically have to overcome so many obstacles in order to achieve their dreams. His true grit, passion and determination are evidence of a man who has stood up to bullies and against all odds, won.
Entertaining, informative and moving, The Tresean Eel will make you laugh one moment and cry with empathy the next. At a time when Cornwall is attracting so much attention from outside it is refreshing to hear it written by someone who knows what it is truly like to be Cornish.
Within the book, Cornish Bard, Tim Saunders writes in his Foreword, ‘for Kevin, Cornwall is where we live and work, where we fight and make up, win and lose, fail and start up again. He tells us more about Cornish society and its workings than most sociologists and economists know. It’s far more than a picturesque backdrop for one man’s adventures.’
Kevin says, “writing this book during the pandemic has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever attempted. I hope people will enjoy my stories as much as I’ve enjoyed remembering them.
And I hope more than anything that people will empathise with my journey. Realise that underneath it all, we are actually as one at the end of the day.”
