After my brother was assaulted, the initial support generated from people and from educational entities was limited; people were ambivalent about aligning themselves with our pursuit of justice. As time progressed however, key individuals and multiple governmental organisations came forward and took a stance against the attackers and the corruption that plagued our legal case. People that we barely knew signed our petition and shared our articles, under the pretext that this bombardment of online support and cohesive outrage at the legal system and the educational institutions protecting the attackers would benefit my brother. Well, it did. Purdue University prides itself on the character of students that it takes on and the calibre of students it releases. In response to your petition signing and our campaigning, Purdue University has suspended Ryan Yunshang Wang for one academic year and has been told to vacate the University, with an eligibility to reapply to the university the following year. Ryan has to meet several conditions including the completion of a lengthy written assignment, a personal responsibility/anger management/decision making course, and a re-entry interview. Purdue stresses that readmission to the university is not a guarantee through this process. Purdue has expressed an attitude of zero tolerance towards physical assault, gang violence and predatory behaviour, placing an emphasis on the re-education and rehabilitation of Ryan, which we agree is necessary. My brother, mother and I wish to express our gratitude towards those people who helped us unconditionally and to thank the Disciplinary Board at Purdue University, for its support. We now call on Cornell University to similarly sanction Raymond Tony Chang. It is time for you to step up. You endeavour to create students that will 'enhance the lives and livelihoods' of people 'around the world' and that 'treat all individuals with dignity, respect and fairness'. Unfortunately, Raymond Tony Chang does not represent or reflect the core values that Cornell University promotes and thus should not be allowed to attend whilst this court case is ongoing and while my brother is in hospital, unable to begin his tertiary education. We invite you to review all the evidence and information that we made available to Purdue University. We are available to assist you in your investigation at any time.
