The sleazy company Rent To Kill has convinced Copper Branch that the best way to save money and to control mice is to ignore the holes in the walls, and break the necks, noses, tails, paws, etc of mice with snap traps to avoid them from getting stuck in the glue traps.  (Oh, and the bait boxes have 1 hole, not two.  The only way the cardboard bait boxes have two holes is if you unfold them.  Irrelevant but an idiosyncratic autistic correction).  Here is what Copper Branch answered.  Please write to them and let them know there are alternatives.

As a vegan myself, I completely share your concerns about glue traps. I personally asked the pest control company to add mechanical traps at the two openings of the boxes, to reduce the risk of a mouse getting stuck. However, the sticky traps still play a role: they help control insects and they attract mice with their particular smell, and they make it possible to track what kind of insects are present inside the restaurant. I actually tried stopping their use completely once, and we immediately started having problems with mice.

I totally agree with you that the law should change. Glue traps should not be allowed the way they are currently used; they are absolutely cruel. At the same time, for us right now, it’s unfortunately not possible to rely only on other methods. Pest control is essential in a restaurant environment.

I believe we have 100% control over what we choose to eat, but in this situation, I don’t have that same freedom of choice. We must ensure food safety, manage our finances more carefully than ever, and I also need to take care of my own mental health. That’s why, for now, asking the pest control company to at least install two mechanical traps in front of each hole in the box is the most effective compromise I can make. Unfortunately, if managers don’t specifically request it, the company won’t do it.

We definitely need to push for change in the bigger picture. It’s not only vegan restaurants that shouldn’t be using glue traps in this way, there’s a much broader fight ahead.
