Cooler, Safer Homes: A Proposal for 88 Townsend
The Issue
Losing my father to lung disease taught me firsthand how vital reliable indoor cooling is for health and safety. For our most vulnerable neighbors—including infants, seniors, and those living with asthma—air conditioning isn't a luxury; it's an essential line of defense against severe heat-related illness [1]. At 88 Townsend, every resident deserves safe, dependable access to a cool home.
The Challenge: Architectural Review
- HOA email: “In the Association guideline amendment, there will be no plexi or modified window inserts plexiglass, acrylic, polycarbonate, or similar panels allowed, as it relates to seasonal air conditioning.”
Already a cumbersome architectural review is required for AC installation. Our HOA is currently moving to amend architectural guidelines to prohibit common, safe installation materials like plexiglass panels for seasonal AC units. These materials are essential for fitting air conditioners safely into our casement windows without blocking natural light [2,3].
Our Proposal: Pre-Approved Installation Standard
We have a right to safe, healthy living conditions. Rather than prohibiting specific materials, we ask the Board to establish a preferred standardized, pre-approved installation protocol. This approach allows any material, provided it meets objective standards for safety, integrity, and aesthetics, ensuring clarity for residents while meeting Association requirements.
Take Action
88 Townsend owners take action! Sign our petition urging the HOA to partner with residents on a solution that balances community aesthetics with neighbor health. We request a town hall meeting to discuss these concerns and a formal member vote on any proposed architectural guideline changes.
