The Issue

Growing up in Waukegan public schools, I have experienced the rich cultural diversity our community embraces. Having lived amongst this diversity, it has been heartbreaking to watch recent events unfold. The initiatives by ICE have sent waves of fear throughout our community, especially affecting our Hispanic neighbors and their children. No child should have to attend school under the shadow of fear about their own or their family's well-being. Our children deserve to pursue an education in a safe and supportive environment.

With approximately 59% of Waukegan's population being of Hispanic descent and about 80% of students in Waukegan public schools sharing this heritage, it is critical to create a secure space for them.

During this difficult time for our community, transitioning Waukegan public schools to an e-learning framework is not only practical but necessary. It allows our children to continue their education securely from home, protecting both them and their families from any external threats. Alongside this transition, it is equally essential to address the nutritional needs of students who rely on school-provided meals. Therefore, an effective plan should be put in place that enables the delivery of hot lunches to students at home.

This initiative ensures no child in Waukegan has to sacrifice their education or basic needs due to the fears enveloping our community. Join us in urging the school board to transition Waukegan public schools to e-learning and implement meal delivery during this period. Every voice matters in protecting the future of our children and the well-being of our community.

Please sign this petition to help make e-learning and meal delivery a reality for Waukegan public school students during these challenging times.
