Who is responsible for the wildlife devastation on Hemlock Road?
Who decided to cut hundreds of trees for the new Wakefield / NEMT Energy Park during the absolute PEAK of spring nesting season?
The lack of proper planning and concern for wildlife and the environment has hit a new low here in Wakefield with the outrageous and dumb decision to cut hundreds of trees for the new High schools Energy Park at the absolute worst possible time of year.
The birds nesting with eggs and offspring and many other creatures living in that area of the forest which was once Article 97-protected land, had no way to avoid the chain saws and chipping machines that just cut down the section of forest on Hemlock Road. The worst time to cut down a tree is during the peak of nesting season. How many nests, eggs and fledglings were killed?
Anyone who deals in construction or land management should have known and automatically planned for the appropriate timing of clear-cutting the new Energy Park site. This terrible wildlife destruction was totally avoidable with proper planning.
I understand that the Energy Park was going to cut down over 200 trees+ on Hemlock, but each one of us should be completely disgusted and outraged with the timing that demonstrates a blatant disregard for animals during their most vulnerable time.
The question is, who approved the cutting these mature trees during the absolute peak of nesting season? Do they even care about the loss?
As Henry David Thoreau said:
“Every creature is better alive than dead, men and moose and pine-trees,
and he who understands it aright will rather preserve its life than destroy
it”.
