Container Ban for Bodie Toohey

The Issue

A container is something that restricts an infants movement or traditional movement patterns. Examples are: swings, walkers, jumpers, bumbo seats, etc. Children at all childcare facilities and their families are at risk from their childcare centers having access to various containers to occupy infants for minutes. Access to these containers for prolonged periods of time can pose a risk for the child's health. Aside from potential death, other implications of container use include: developmental delays, plagiocephaly, torticollis and decreased overall muscle strength. There are many alternative toys and activities that these childcare providers can use other than containers that put children at risk. There are several alternatives that can be used by facilities during the day that do not restrict the movement of the child or can encourage safe head positioning.

Bodie Toohey was 2 months old when his life tragically ended when found unresponsive after sleeping in a swing at his daycare.

Families are trusting these childcare facilities with their babies. Use of these containers in these environments where children are going to be safe can easily be avoided by not being allowed. If things stay the same, there are more children's lives and qualities of lives at stake. Not to mention, the families mental health who are also impacted by the facilities that utilize these containers. Loss of more lives are inevitable. We do not allow smoking in childcare facilities due to the potential health implications, why are we allowing something just as potentially deadly?

Now is the time to act. It's time to act for the babies of the future. With the increased population growth over Covid-19 and the demand for childcare, this presents a potential for these tools to be utilized more frequently and impacting more lives than the population norm. Immediate action is needed for the safety and mental health of our young families and their children.
