Consult and amend Sechelt supportive housing plans

The Issue

I live in Sechelt, and like many of my neighbours, I am deeply concerned about the current plans for new supportive housing proposed by BC Housing, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the BC Province. While we wholeheartedly acknowledge the pressing need for more supportive housing, the decision to concentrate all these facilities downtown poses significant challenges and risks to our community. The downtown area of Sechelt is already grappling with issues of crime and lawlessness, which have left residents and local businesses feeling unsafe. This proposal, if implemented, threatens to exacerbate these problems by attracting even more vulnerable individuals to an area that's already struggling to cope.

Supportive housing is vital, but locating all these services in one area—especially a small, already burdened vicinity like Sechelt's downtown—is not a sustainable or fair solution. We believe in a more balanced approach where supportive housing is distributed across different regions, lessening the impact on any one community and providing a safer, more secure environment for everyone involved.

Evidence suggests that when supportive housing is dispersed throughout a region, rather than concentrated in one area, it leads to better outcomes for the residents and the community at large. Studies conducted in cities worldwide have demonstrated that decentralizing services helps distribute benefits and responsibilities, fostering a more inclusive society where vulnerable individuals are better integrated into the wider community.

We urge BC Housing, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the BC Province to revisit their plans for Sechelt. Engage with locals in meaningful consultations, listen to the voices of those who will be directly impacted, and consider alternative locations for these much-needed facilities. Real community engagement, paired with a commitment to amend the current proposals, could pave the way for a future in Sechelt where everyone feels secure, valued, and heard.

Sign this petition to demand that our leaders consider a more thoughtful and community-oriented approach to supportive housing in Sechelt.
