Construct permanent SEN classrooms

The Issue

As parents, we are delighted to see our new building being built for Kilcoole Primary School. Our children deserve a modern, welcoming school where every child has a place and feels that they belong.

But how can we talk about inclusion when children with special educational needs have been offered modular accommodation instead of a permanent classroom like the rest of the school?

For parents of children with additional needs, this is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It is about the message we send to our children.

Imagine being a child and discovering that the school being built for your future wasn't really built with you in mind. That your classroom came later. That your space came later. That your needs were considered later.

Our children should never feel like an addition to the plan. They should know they were part of the plan from the very beginning.

Inclusion isn't simply finding somewhere to put a child. It means creating a school where every child has a proper, permanent place within the school community.

There is still time to change this. The building is currently underway, and we are asking that permanent SEN classrooms be incorporated into the development now — rather than expecting these children to make do with modular accommodation.

Our children deserve better. They deserve to learn in spaces that are thoughtfully built with their unique needs in mind. Help us secure a better future for them by urging the Department for Education and our local councils to build permanent educational facilities for our SEN students and not modular accommodation. Please sign this petition and stand with us for better school infrastructures that cater specifically to all children's needs.
