The image you see is Bridgewater State Hospital. The complex is loaded with toxic mold, insect and rodent infestation, asbestos, dilapidated walls, ceilings, floors, plumbing and electrical. There is no air conditioning!  Massachusetts Department of Public Health facility inspector says he is very concerned about disease transmittal.  The mold inspection expert says " No one should be working or housed at  Bridgewater State Hospital ".

Bridgewater State Hospital is overseen by the Department of Corrections, sued in 2020 for civil rights violations, abuse and neglect. Violations persist regardless of any agreements made with the Department of Justice in a 2022 settlement agreement.

You may find the ongoing abuses and neglect here by reading the Massachusetts Disability Law Center monitor reports for Bridgewater State hopsital for more than a decade.

Disability Law Center reports found here:

Investigation by the justice department:

Interestingly, no one at Bridgewater State Hospital has been found guilty of any crime. The Bridgewater State Hospital population is very similar to the Worcester Recovery Center Hospital.  This is an image of Worcester Recovery Center Hospital overseen by the Department of Mental Health.

Like any other illness, serious mental illness deserves a therapeutic environment in a hospital overseen by experts, the Department of Mental Health.

Key aspects of a therapeutic environment:

Safety and security:

A physical space free from hazards and designed with features that promote safety for individuals experiencing mental health crises.

Social support and community:

Opportunities to connect with others, share experiences, and receive peer support, which can reduce isolation and foster a sense of belonging.

Structured environment:

A predictable routine and a sense of order that can help individuals learn life skills and practice more responsible behaviors.

Empowerment and autonomy:

An environment that respects individual preferences, allows for choice in treatment, and provides spaces for privacy and self-expression.
Contact with nature: Access to natural elements, such as green spaces, can reduce stress, improve mood, and amplify positive effects on the brain.
Why it matters:

Behavioral and psychological improvement:

A therapeutic setting can facilitate behavioral changes and enhance a person's psychological health. Skill development: Individuals can learn and practice essential life skills in a supportive, low-stress environment.

Reduced social isolation:

It provides a community and social network for individuals who may lack these in their natural environments.

Positive reinforcement:

It helps foster greater self-esteem, positive relationships, and responsible behaviors.
Considerations:

Individual needs:

The specific type and degree of support needed vary greatly depending on the individual and the nature of their mental illness.

Broader environment:

The positive impact of a therapeutic environment can be amplified or hindered by other factors, including family structure, access to social services, and overall community well-being.
