I am a product of Lumberton, and a former skateboard enthusiast. Growing up, skateboarding was my escape, my passion, my identity. However, our town lacked a dedicated place for us to skate and express ourselves - we had to build our own ramps, only to be chased off every lot we skated on.

Lumberton's children need more opportunities for safe, positive activities. Our town faces a significant problem with drugs and violence, a problem that I believe is exacerbated by a lack of engaging, creative outlets for our youth. A skatepark could be one such outlet. It would not serve skateboarders alone, but also roller bladers, BMX riders, and roller skaters. Skateboarding, in particular, can teach kids perseverance, balance, physical endurance, and risk calculation, skills crucial to their overall development.

According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, communities with skateparks notice a decrease in youth crime and an increase in athletic participation. Lumberton deserves this positive change. We need it for our kids and for our future as a vibrant, supportive community.

Please sign this petition to urge our parks and recreation department to construct a multipurpose skatepark in Lumberton. Let's give our kids the creative, safe space that they deserve.
