Consistent Maintenance Needed at Lady Bird Lake Public Restrooms

The Issue

Having visited some of the most beautiful and healthiest cities in the world, I've seen firsthand how essential it is to have dedicated staff monitoring and maintaining public restrooms. Clean and functional restroom facilities contribute significantly to the overall impression and accessibility of public spaces. It is disheartening to see that the restrooms around Lady Bird Lake in Austin, TX, fall short of these standards.

Austin prides itself on being a healthy, active, and outdoor-oriented lifestyle. Lady Bird Lake, with its scenic trails and thriving ecosystem, is a centerpiece for residents and tourists alike. However, the state of the public restrooms fails to reflect the city’s values of health, hospitality and community. On multiple occasions, these restrooms have been found dirty with toilet paper carelessly placed on chain links. In many instances, the toilets are backed up, sewage flowing up from drains, and many either out of order, closed, or desperately in need of maintenance.

This predicament not only tarnishes Austin's reputation as a welcoming and pristine city but also poses health and hygiene risks to the many people who use these facilities daily. Ensuring these restrooms are clean and operational at all times should be a priority for a city that hosts numerous outdoor activities and events.

We call upon the City of Austin and relevant municipal authorities to allocate dedicated staff to maintain these restrooms consistently. The current system is not working. By implementing regular cleaning and restocking schedules and ensuring all facilities are safe, operational, and accessible year-round, Austin can preserve its image as a top outdoor destination.

Above all, clean restrooms are not a luxury. They are a basic standard of health, dignity and civic pride. Let’s work together to make Austin’s public spaces as beautiful and welcoming as the community that loves them. Please sign this petition to support consistent maintenance of public restrooms around Lady Bird Lake. Better Hygiene = Better Quality of Living
