Después de mucho pensarlo, el pasado 15 de mayo visitamos una protectora de Madrid para conocer a sus perros con idea de adoptar. Tras analizar con ellos cuáles se adaptaban mejor a nuestro estilo de vida, nos enamoramos de Alana, una podenca de 10 meses y 7 kilos de peso.

Según el protocolo de esta protectora, firmamos un contrato de acogida y a los 15 días firmaríamos la adopción. Esto no figuraba en dicho documento, pero confiamos en la asociación.

Una vez en casa, la adaptación fue complicada. La perra estaba acostumbrada a otro entorno, a otra casa de acogida, y tardó varias semanas en integrarse en el nuevo hogar.

Cuando pasaron los primeros 15 días decidimos alargar el periodo de acogida, pero nos preocupaba el bienestar de Alana. Si alargábamos el proceso y finalmente no conseguíamos dicha adaptación, tal vez perdería la opción de encontrar otro hogar, por lo que escribimos a la asociación informando de todo esto y avisando para que la difundiesen, pensando que sería un proceso largo.

De todas formas, nosotros continuamos trabajando con ella. Recibimos la visita de un familiar que lleva años trabajando en el mundo de perros y gatos y gracias todo ello poco después Alana estaba feliz en casa, mucho más tranquila, disfrutando de sus paseos ¡E incluso ha hecho amigos perrunos!

Vimos que la protectora tardaba en difundirla y pensamos que eso nos daba más tiempo para que estuviese adaptada al 100%. Estuvimos tentados de llamar para la adopción definitiva, pero nos daba miedo precipitarnos.

Finalmente, hace una semana vimos que la habían compartido y empezamos a hacernos el planteamiento de forma seria. Ya teníamos decidida su adopción cuando este lunes día 17 nos informaron de que ya tiene adopción firmada en Alemania y que debe irse si o sí el 26 de Julio.

Les informamos de que deseábamos adoptarla nosotros, que por favor nos diesen la opción, pero nos dicen que no hay alternativa. Es más, hoy nos han llamado para comunicarnos que debemos entregarla este mismo fin de semana.

En el tiempo que Alana lleva con nosotros, no solo hemos trabajado su estado emocional, que ha mejorado muchísimo, volviéndose una perra equilibrada y mucho más tranquila, sino que su físico ha dado un cambio impresionante. Llegó a casa con 7 kilos y actualmente su peso es de 8 kilos y medio y su musculatura ha aumentado.

Estamos comprometidos al 100% con ella. La conocemos y la queremos. Nos hemos ofrecido a pagar los gastos que suponga la adopción en Alemania, los costes de la cancelación e incluso la adopción de otro perro para la familia de allí (que solo conoce a Alana en foto).

¿De verdad es necesario que viaje hasta otro país cuando aquí tiene una familia que la ama? Entendemos que nos hemos equivocado dudando sobre su adopción, pero muchos que habéis vivido la adaptación de un nuevo animal entenderéis que los inicios son a veces muy difíciles y pueden hacernos dudar.

Somos humanos y cometemos errores, pero prometemos ser la mejor familia que Alana pueda tener.

After much consideration, on May 15th, we visited a shelter to meet their dogs with the intention of adopting. After discussing with them which dogs would best fit our lifestyle, we fell in love with Alana, a 10-month-old, 7-kilogram podenco.

According to the shelter's protocol, we signed a foster care contract and were supposed to finalize the adoption after 15 days. This was not stated in the document, but we trusted the association.

Once at home, the adaptation was complicated. The dog was used to a different environment, another foster home, and it took several weeks for her to integrate into her new home.

After the first 15 days, we decided to extend the foster period, but we were concerned about Alana's well-being. If we prolonged the process and ultimately did not achieve the desired adaptation, she might lose the opportunity to find another home. So, we wrote to the association informing them of this and asked them to start promoting her adoption, thinking it would be a long process.

Meanwhile, we continued working with her. We received a visit from a relative who has years of experience working with dogs and cats, and thanks to all this, soon after, Alana was happy at home, much calmer, enjoying her walks, and she even made dog friends!

We noticed the shelter was slow in promoting her, and we thought this gave us more time for her to be fully adapted. We were tempted to call for the final adoption, but we were afraid of rushing.

Finally, a week ago, we saw that they had shared her profile, and we began to seriously consider it. We had already decided to adopt her when, this Monday the 17th, we were informed that she already has an adoption agreement in Germany and that she must leave by July 26th.

We informed them that we wanted to adopt her, asking them to give us the option, but they told us there was no alternative. Moreover, today they called us to inform us that we must hand her over this very weekend.

During the time Alana has been with us, we have not only worked on her emotional state, which has improved immensely, making her a balanced and much calmer dog, but her physical condition has also changed significantly. She came to us weighing 7 kilograms, and she now weighs 8.5 kilograms, with increased muscle mass.

We are 100% committed to her. We know her and we love her. We have offered to cover the costs of the adoption in Germany, the cancellation costs, and even the adoption of another dog for the family there (who only knows Alana from photos).

Is it really necessary for her to travel to another country when she has a family that loves her here? We understand that we made a mistake by hesitating about her adoption, but many who have experienced the adaptation of a new animal will understand that the beginnings are sometimes very difficult and can make us doubt.

We are human and we make mistakes, but we promise to be the best family Alana could have.
