The petition also garnered 40,711 views and has been shared 1,485 times.
A traffic committee, including the Sooke Chamber of Commerce and local builders, was formed, and the Council discussed working with this committee to gather ideas and find solutions.
However, despite all these efforts, no shovels have touched soil and it feels like we’re stuck in a frustrating cycle.
The petition was launched on June 8, and as we approach September, with school starting and everyone returning to their regular routines after the summer, the urgency of this issue is only increasing.
The Sooke local council is set to resume meetings on September 9th, and the provincial election on October 19th is fast approaching.
We must act now, as Sooke’s leverage will be dead after the election.
It’s maddening to think that after all this effort, Sooke Council has not moved the needle, that there have been no announcements from the NDP—our current provincial government.
We’ve seen the impact traffic has on our community firsthand—40 business members bravely stood before council, some in tears, worried about losing their businesses, others calculating their losses due to the unbearable traffic, the lost work-time, family-time, family budgets hit with increased transportation costs and further pollution and degradation to the environment.
This situation cannot continue.
What do we do now?
Someone suggested hundreds show up to that Sept. 9 Council meeting, surely 40 business people, some in tears would move everyone, Sooke Council and NDP Gov. to do something!, Will 100's showing up at Council make a difference?
Let's discuss the next steps and keep this momentum going. Let’s not let our efforts go to waste—together, we can make a difference. Join the discussion at https://www.facebook.com/groups/meanwhileinsookepolitics
