385 families make their home in Pinewoods Community, a vibrant part of Athens-Clarke County. Among them are 291 students who attend Clarke County Schools and deserve the same basic resources as any other child in the district. However, these families face a significant challenge: the lack of reliable access to clean water. This has been an ongoing issue for more than 20 years, dating back to 2004, due to an aging water system that frequently breaks down, leaving residents without access to clean water, sometimes for hours or even days. The cost to make these improvements and connect to city water is the main barrier facing this privately owned community. The owners are unable to cover the cost of the city connection, leaving residents to face a public health nightmare. 

Water is a fundamental human necessity, essential not only for drinking, but also for cooking and bathing and washing clothes. Yet, the residents of Pinewoods are unsure each day if their taps will run clear or at all. This uncertainty is not only inconvenient, but can be detrimental, especially to children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to health issues arising from inadequate sanitation.

The land within Pinewoods is privately owned, but it falls under the jurisdiction of Athens-Clarke County. This should entitle the community to be integrated into the city’s water system, ensuring a steady and safe water supply for all residents. Connecting Pinewoods to the city water system would not only provide a reliable solution, but also demonstrate a commitment to ensuring equitable access to essential services for all citizens.

We urge our local government to prioritize the needs of the Pinewoods Community by taking steps to connect it to the city's water infrastructure. This would not only resolve long-standing issues, but significantly improve the quality of life for hundreds of individuals who contribute to our shared community.
