Hi Lex/Waltham bike infrastructure supporters,
One major update: a large section of Lexington St. in Waltham has bike lanes now! (see the picture!)
They are far from perfect. They're narrow in places. In other areas there are discontinuities, or the bike lanes are only on one side of the road. But they represent a huge step in the right direction for Waltham and required some bravery from the Waltham Traffic Commission to approve.
Leo in Waltham (who did a lot of work to help us get this far), informs me that the Traffic Commission is receiving so much negative feedback that they're considering ripping the bike lanes out altogether and going back to the old striping. This would be a big step in the wrong direction.
You can help save the bike lanes, and encourage future improvements, by writing a letter to the traffic commission with positive comments
regarding cycling and driving on the newly striped section. Paper letters are best, addressed to:
Waltham Traffic Commission
155 Lexington St.
Waltham, MA 02451
with heading
"Hello (or Dear)" Chief MacPherson and Commission members,
but you can also email or call
flombardo@police.waltham.ma.us
Frank Lombardo
Clerk of the Waltham Traffic Commission
TELEPHONE NO: 781-314-3519
Fax No: 781-314-3506
Even if you're extremely short on time, a letter/email/call only takes a moment to do, and a short note is *much* better than nothing.
Thanks and happy cycling!
Jennifer
