Congressional Pledge Against Hateful and Divisive Language

The Issue

Petition for a Congressional Pledge Against Hateful and Divisive Language

To the Esteemed Members of the United States Congress,

We, the undersigned citizens of the United States, respectfully submit this petition to urge each and every Member of Congress to formally pledge to cease the use of hateful, dehumanizing, and divisive language in all public discourse, especially when criticizing political opponents.

Our nation is facing unprecedented levels of political polarization, fueled in part by a rhetorical climate that has become toxic and often contemptuous. When elected officials—those who represent the highest ideals of our republic—resort to derogatory and inflammatory terms, they not only debase the legislative process but also model destructive behavior that trickles down into our communities, harming civil society and undermining the very foundations of our democracy.

We recognize that robust debate and strong criticism are vital components of a healthy democracy. However, there is a fundamental distinction between criticizing policies and character assassination. The consistent use of labels designed to demean, dehumanize, or falsely equate opponents with historically abhorrent figures or ideologies fosters an environment of hostility, mistrust, and disrespect, making constructive collaboration nearly impossible.

Therefore, we call upon all Members of Congress to make a public and binding pledge to refrain from using, promoting, or condoning the following categories of hateful and divisive language, and any similar terms that serve to demonize rather than debate:

Terms of Extremism and Tyranny:

 Nazi
 Fascist
Communist
Marxist
Tyrant
Dictator
Authoritarian

Terms of Bigotry and Prejudice:

Racist
Sexist
Homophobe / Homophobic
Xenophobe / Xenophobic
Bigot
Supremacist
Antisemite / Antisemitic

Terms of Dehumanization and Contempt:

Deplorable
Libtard
Snowflake
Redneck
Ignorant
Stupid
Lunatic
Grifter
Clown
Moron
Demoncrat
RINO (Republican In Name Only - used to delegitimize)
Woke (when used as a pejorative to dismiss genuine concerns)

Terms Questioning Loyalty and Patriotism:

Traitor
Un-American
Globalist
Enemy of the People

By adopting this pledge, Members of Congress will demonstrate a profound commitment to restoring civility, fostering mutual respect, and upholding the integrity of public service. Such a pledge is not about stifling free speech, but about elevating the standard of discourse to one befitting the leaders of a great nation.

We believe that true leadership involves setting an example of respectful engagement, even in the face of profound disagreement. We urge our elected representatives to lead the way in healing the divisions that plague our nation and to commit to a politics of principle over personal attack.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request your commitment to this vital pledge.
