Congress to pass the “ Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act of 2021”

The Issue

The "Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act of 2021" act was drafted by California House Representative Ro Khanna. It was first brought to the House in 2020, but has been sitting on the House floor for 2 years. This Act was created to limit the term of Supreme Court Justices at 18 years max, and includes plans on how to successfully make that happen. Having this act will be beneficial, because it will restore checks and balances in the country. The Supreme Court will have term limits like the rest of the branches in our government. With this act, our government will have plenty of time to choose and vote for a new replacement, so there will be a smoother transition than there is now.

After recent activity in the SCOTUS regarding Roe v. Wade, I believe it is fair to say that most justices in the Court have a biased and discriminatory view of the people in this country. Abortion, as well as gay marriage, is a human right, and even if it wasn't written in the Constitution by our forefathers, it should be federally protected. Now, Roe v Wade is not protected federally because of the excuse that even if it is a human right, as it wasn't written in our Constitution, it cannot be protected federally. Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito said “The inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the nation's history and traditions.” If the Supreme Court truly believed their excuse for Roe being overturned, then most court rulings, bills, and acts after 1788 would be overturned based on their reasoning that it wasn't in the constitution from the beginning. The Constitution was ratified to create a more perfect union, which means our branches have the responsibility to create new amendments to protect the rights of the people. Because of rulings like these, it is easy to tell that our justices follow their own biased opinions when making decisions on what is and what cannot be federally protected. Most justices are from older generations, who hold different opinions on subjects in which the people hold dearly today. Now after Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas is trying to gain momentum on Obergefell v. Hodges to overturn gay marriage.  This is why I believe the Supreme Court should have a term limit of 18 years, as proposed by Congressman Ro Khanna. We need to pass the “Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act of 2021”
