Here's another factoid from a Start By Believing training slide:
- "Statistics show that rapists don't just attack once -- many reoffend, often multiple times." -- see image, above.
The SBB slide doesn't provide a citation for the claim, so it's fair to ask, Is the assertion really true?
The statement can be traced back to the claims of a psychologist named David Lisak, who asserted that 90% of campus rapes are committed by serial offenders who average six rapes each.
But is this shocking claim really true?
Several years ago, journalist Robby Soave decided to take a closer look at the data, and interviewed Lisak. Turns out that Lisak couldn't remember the exact sources of his data. After further probing, Soave concluded,
- "What's remarkable about these surveys is that they don't actually have anything to do with campus sexual assault."
A subsequent study looked at the same question, and concluded that most college rapists were not serial predators.
Maybe the best way for Start By Believing to observe its 10-year anniversary would be to review the claims on all of its training slides, verify their accuracy, and provide citations.
Just a suggestion.
Sincerely,
Edward Bartlett
