If Congress doesn’t act soon the doubling of these rates will make it harder for millions of students to have access to an affordable and a quality college education.

- The U.S Senate
- The U.S House of Representatives
We, on behalf of the students of American University, urge you to take action to prevent an interest rate increase on subsidized Stafford loans from 3.4% to 6.8%. If Congress doesn’t act soon the doubling of these rates will make it harder for millions of students to have access to an affordable and a quality college education.
American University is a school on the rise and is located here in our nation’s Capital. Over 7,000 undergraduates attend AU each year and that number continues to grow. We pride ourselves on having students from all fifty states and over 150 countries. However, the average AU student graduates with around $36,200 in debt, making our graduates the most indebted in DC. If Congress allows the Stafford interest rates to double it will put an increased economic burden on AU students, making AU less accessible and affordable for many of our students.
If AU becomes less affordable the students that will suffer the most are lower to middle class students, irreconcilably damaging our commitment to creating a diverse and accessible university.
Because of the potential damage the doubling of the Stafford interest rates will do to our campus community, we call upon Congress to act now to protect students and vote not to double the interest rates. If Congress is as interested in investing in the future of America as it claims, then invest in us, the students, by voting against the impending doubling of Stafford interest rates.
