Permanently eliminate the shortage of generic drugs.

The recent shortage off the chemotherapy drug methotrexate is a matter of life or death for Owen McMasters and the 3,500 kids diagnosed each year with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). With proper treatment, methotrexate, over 80% of children can be cured of ALL.  However, methotrexate is absolutely essential.  There is no substitute for this drug.  A delay in receiving methotrexate can mean the difference between cure and fatal relapse.

The Make-A Wish-Foundation recently contacted Owen, and his only wish is to solve the problem of chemotherapy shortages so that children with cancer can receive the treatment they need.

A recent critical shortage of methotrexate threatened to delay treatment of children with ALL.  While the FDA has announced that the immediate threat has been temporarily resolved, this problem will continue.  Currently, daunorubicin is another chemotherapy drug used to treat ALL that is in critical shortage.  Six months ago there was a critical shortage of cytarabine, another crucial ALL chemotherapy drug.  There are more than 250 drugs in shortage in the United States right now, and the list is growing.  Almost all of these are generic drugs, which are very inexpensive.  Pharmaceutical companies make very little profit producing these drugs, leading to chronic shortages.

Please act now to enact policies to permanently eliminate the shortage of generic drugs so that children with cancer and other serious illnesses can receive the medications they need.  Do not put the lives of our children at risk.  Help to make Owen’s wish come true.

Thank you,
