Abolish the ATF

Abolish the ATF
The Issue
The time has come to abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. They have repeatedly proven that they do not uphold their oath to the Constitution. Their numerous failed operations have ended up with weapons in the hands of Cartel members leading to innocent people killed. A lot of the innocent people killed by the ATF were American citizens meaning no harm.
For example; At Mount Carmel in Waco, Texas, agents of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) launched a raid against the Branch Davidian compound as part of an investigation into illegal possession of firearms and explosives by the Christian cult. There is evidence and eye witness accounts that the ATF started the shootout, and the Branch Davidians, fearing for their lives fired back in legitimate self defense. After a standoff lasting 7 weeks, the ATF and FBI released tear gas into the compound knowing full well that it would result in a fire. That is exactly what happened. The fire burned innocent men, women and children alive while the ATF did nothing to stop it. The ATF raid on the Branch Davidians is only one example of their unconstitutional brutality against American citizens.
On top of their murdering of innocents, the ATF is an oxymoron in itself. Neither alcohol, tobacco or firearms are illegal in the United States. The regulation of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, or explosives is simply not a legitimate function of government. Any legitimate law-enforcement function of the ATF could certainly be handled by another agency under the umbrella of the Justice Department. Their budget comes in at $1.152 billion. With the ATF abolished, that money could be allocated towards more important government projects.
If America is really the land of the free, we do not need a department such as the ATF. That is why the time has come for the American people to stand up and vote for their abolition.
