Lower Chester Park/Congdon Park Hockey Update

As you know, Congdon Park Hockey has been engaged in the Mini Master Plan process with the City of Duluth for nearly two years. The process included over 20 formal meetings with the City Parks and Recreation Department, Duluth Parks Commission, Duluth City Council, among others. Congdon Park Hockey would like to thank you for your engagement and patience throughout the process, including signing the initial petition, and your commitment to outdoor hockey in Duluth.  We are happy to report that the Lower Chester Mini Master Plan was passed by the City Council on February 26th and we’ve been working with the City since to determine next steps. The final plan can be accessed HERE.

Here are the highlights for Congdon Park Hockey:

1.    We have a guaranteed home for the next decade at Lower Chester Park;

2.    We will have a large second rink with a player’s box: only one side will need to be removed in the summer; the players box will be permanent and will serve as storage in the off-season;

3.    The plan calls for major investment into the park, including improved drainage and grading which will make flooding much easier at the beginning of the season;

4.    There will be an expanded recreational skating area;

5.    There will be separate user agreements for Congdon Park Hockey and other park users;

6.    Congdon Park Hockey financial match: the plan does require a $20,500 match from CPH, which is a fraction of the total investment. CPH is beginning fundraising now to begin making improvements to the park this fall.

Fundraising -- Help!

We need your assistance to make Lower Chester Park the best outdoor rink in Duluth. If you are interested in donating funds to assist us with the required match, it would be greatly appreciated. In addition to the new players box and other additions per the recently passed agreement, the large rink needs new fencing at the ends, dasher boards and sill caps need to be replaced, and there is a general need for maintenance.

There are several ways to give. Congdon Park Hockey is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
