Condemn persecution of LGBT people in Brunei
This petition made change with 65,425 supporters!
We want the UK to be clear that it condemns new anti-LGBT laws in Brunei that could see people being stoned to death just for being gay. Other punishments for same-sex activity could include whipping and up to 10 years in prison.
We believe that the UK’s best chance of influencing governments in other countries to improve citizens’ human rights is by linking human rights to trade relations. And the UK is Brunei’s 6th biggest importer - they imported $132 million of UK goods in 2017.
So we are calling on (1) Paul Scully MP, UK trade envoy to Brunei and (2) Richard Graham MP, UK trade envoy to ASEAN (of which Brunei is a member) to publicly condemn these barbaric laws, and to call on Brunei to stop their introduction.
Seeing how much support this petition has obtained, we are adding to our demands. We still want our trade envoys to use their positions of influence with Brunei.
Our new demand is for the UK government also to call on Brunei to respect human rights by reversing these unjust laws.
