Concerns with the proposed redevelopment of Con Mine site
The Issue
Regarding the proposed redevelopment of Con Mine .
TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
We, the undersigned residents of the Northwest Territories, respectfully submit this petition concerning the potential redevelopment of the historic Con Mine by Gold Terra near established Yellowknife residential neighbourhoods.
Reasons for the petition
- Residents near Con Road and surrounding areas may be affected by noise, vibration, industrial traffic, dust and changes to neighbourhood quality of life.
- Historic mining activities warrant transparent assessment of potentially impacted lands and waterways, including areas outside the former mine boundary.
- Children, older residents and people with sensory sensitivities may experience disproportionate effects from industrial disturbance.
- Any future mining proposal should be evaluated independently, with public participation, clear safeguards and measurable local benefits.
PETITION TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly to urge the Government of the Northwest Territories to:
- oppose and withhold support for any proposed restart of Con Mine until independent environmental, noise, vibration, traffic and community-impact assessments, meaningful consultation and enforceable safeguards are in place;
- advocate for assessment and appropriate remediation of historically impacted lands and waterways, including Rat Lake, Great Slave Lake, Tin Can Hill; to seek measurable local employment and community benefits; and
- pursue independent monitoring and community oversight within its jurisdiction and through representations to other responsible authorities.
By signing, I support the request above. Signatories must be current residents of the Northwest Territories.
