Keep UNCW students on campus to reduce the spread of covid to hometowns

The Issue

Sept. 8 University of North Carolina Wilmington Housing & Residents life sent out an email to the on campus students of UNCW, telling them that the spread of covid-19 on campus is causing for relocations in student housing. By Sept. 10 students with double occupancy rooms must sign up to move out of their dorm and into a single occupancy room- without guarantee of their same building- or they must leave the campus. With this plan there are refunds to students if they leave and/or the reduce of price if their new dorm is less than the current one, but this is not the issue.

Sending students home causes the spread of covid-19 to be even worse. Kids will go home and spread the virus to their hometowns.

""It's the worst thing you could do," he said Wednesday on NBC's "TODAY" show. "When you send them home, particularly when you're dealing with a university where people come from multiple different locations, you could be seeding the different places with infection," said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases." (NBC news).

The campus needs to lockdown rather than sending kids all over the place. Adding curfews, more serious offenses for breaking social distancing and mask requirements, and strict suggestion to not leave campus, can keep the virus in the community of the campus rather than sending it put to all different areas.

The school has been doing a great job, better than most schools, in keeping up the CDC recommendations for health guidelines in this pandemic, but this is not the correct response to the situation.

The students are given 2 days to decided how they will be living for potentially both semesters, and possible will just be sent home all together very soon anyways.

Please get all the help you can from parents, students, and concerned community members from all over to make sure University of North Carolina Wilmington creates a better plan for the safely of everyone in this pandemic.
