We, the concerned Residents of Marion County, Florida, along with our Animal Friends, are joining together to demand immediate improvements at the Marion County Animal Shelter in Ocala. 

Reports of serious issues have continued to grow regarding the conditions within this facility, urging us to act and advocate for change. Numerous reports and eyewitness accounts reveal that the shelter is struggling to maintain basic humane standards, resulting in the suffering of countless animals.  

Animals in shelters are vulnerable and rely on us for their well-being. At the Marion County Animal Shelter, Staff incompetence and lack of proper climate control are very concerning.

Volunteers, Former Staff and Visitors alike have documented instances of dogs and cats being physically abused.

• There have been multiple accounts of dogs being kicked by MCAS Staff as they attempt to corral them. 
• There are reports of a cat improperly euthanized, placed into a freezer alive, and later re-euthanized. This is animal abuse and unacceptable.
• Cat and Dog euthanasia has been reported as mocked and laughed at by MCAS Staff. 
• Reports of dogs incorrectly euthanized without sedation by a method known as a "heart stick" which is traumatic and painful for the animal.

These incidents raise questions about MCAS Staff competency, empathy and supervision.

 Facility conditions are inadequate and inhumane.

• At the Marion County Animal Shelter, there is no air conditioning in the kennels and there were no fans in the outdoor dog kennels. Fans were only installed in the kennels after public outcry, despite temperatures reaching nearly 100° by mid-morning. The welfare of these animals should never rely on public pressure.  

Stray animals continue to overwhelm our community.

• Field responses are often non existent or verbally critical of the concerned Residents volunteering their time, attempting to assist the animals in need.

Animal rights are a fundamental aspect of our moral responsibility. Neglecting these rights is not only unjust, but also reflects poorly on our community. By prioritizing the welfare of animals, we can set a precedent for other shelters and communities state and nationwide.

Marion County officials must act to fulfill their duty of care towards these animals by implementing an immediate action plan.  We urge our  Marion County officials to take urgent action to address these issues:

• Ensure regular inspections by independent, third-party organizations to hold the shelter accountable to maintain humane standards.  
• Increase the shelter's budget, by recruiting and retaining skilled staff.
• Provide ongoing and mandatory staff education.
• Hold abusive staff accountable immediately.

Together, our voices will  lead to meaningful change for the voiceless animals who depend entirely on our compassion and commitment.
