Concerned Jewish students, parents and alumni of Syracuse University

The Issue

Chancellor Syvervud

Ms. Jackson

We are a group of Syracuse Jewish students, parents and alumni. We write to you with deep concern.

Tomorrow your University is hosting an event at the Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences, Dept of African American Studies: "The Occupation of Palestine" with Prof. Rabab Abdulhadi, who is a known anti-semite.  This is incorrect and hateful to Jewish students and can lead to violence. These events have been bastions for Jewish hate, calling to gas and kill the Jews.

23 days after our people were slaughtered, raped and kidnapped in the worst days for Jews since the Holocaust are children are facing hate speech on your campus. Unacceptable. Events and organizations that promote terror and hate should not be held on campus and should not be funded by Syracuse Uiversity.

During this ‘teach-in’ is there a plan to teach about the Jewish woman and children Hamas and the Palestinian people have raped, paraded through the streets of Gaza, beat, and chopped the heads off of? Have you issued a call for the many hostages, including babies and women, and Americans that Hamas is holding be released? I also am curious if the increase of anti-Semitic target attacks following the October 7th massacre will be mentioned during this ‘teach-in’?

The words ‘Dirty Jew’ were carved into a Day Hall dorm room door, a swastika was drawn in the BBB dorms, and an Israeli flag was ripped off a freshman girl's door which resulted in her requesting a dorm change; all events that have happened in the last 3 weeks at the university.

A group of us would like to meet with you this Friday afternoon. We will be joined by Rabbi Rappaport of SU Chabad. These are perilous times for the Jewish people. We are sure you will understand the importance of this matter.

We would like to discuss this further in person Friday or via phone earlier.

Best,

Jewish students, parents and alumni of Syracuse University
