Concerned citizens regarding lack of Vet care

The Issue

We are concerned citizens of Thompson who believe that having access to reliable medical care for our pets is an essential service for this city to have.  The absence of medical care for our pets may result in the departure of professionals and other working people who feel it is necessary to live in a place with Veterinary Care.  We need our City Management and City Councillors to use their platform to advocate for us to have this service in our community.

Dr. Keri at North of 55 Veterinary Services recently published the evidence that demonstrates the clear need for and the detailed use of Veterinary Care in Thompson:

At North of 55 Veterinary Services there are:

·      3391 clients (families with animals)

·      5349 patients (animals accessing care)

·      1-2 urgent/emergency cases per day

·      At least 3-4 emergencies per day that are turned away

·      25-30 regularly scheduled appointments per day

We would also like to highlight the existing requirement that the city of Thompson has for pet owners when registering pets includes proof of valid Rabies vaccination which can only be administered by a licensed Veterinarian.

Is it a fair expectation for the citizens of Thompson to get their pets registered on January 1, 2025, when there will be no regular access for people to get their pets vaccinated against rabies?  As of now, the most severe consequence for having an unvaccinated dog is removal of the dog from the owner. The bylaw states that the animal will be kept until it is vaccinated.

We are seeking support from other citizens of Thompson who care about their animals, and who want to remain in Thompson but are, like us, fearful of the need to leave because of the lack of Veterinary care that will be available.

By signing this petition you are indicating that you would like our City Management and City Councillors to take an active interest in this issue and advocate for its’ citizens to have this essential medical service.

Thank-you for your support.

Signed,

Megan and Jenn
