To the Editor:
(Re: “Cookietown no more,” May 21) Many years ago, I owned shares of ConAgra. They were not doing well in their marketing product areas.
Also, in reading their proxy materials I found that they were rewarding their board of directors richly — if you served on their board three years your favorite charity was rewarded with a $1 million grant at your death. This, beyond the normal high board rewards.
I sold the shares and bought other stock.
... The trouble with corporations that own production facilities in small communities all over the country is their accountants do what is best for the companies’ bottom line without considering the investment people have made in homes, schools and community betterment.
They walk away and leave families with community debt obligation, mortgages and schools without students — as their parents move to the next seldom-permanent jobs.
