Remember the magic of going to the movies in the 90s? The seats filled with anticipation as the lights dimmed, with everyone fully immersed in the cinematic experience. Today, that magic is frequently interrupted by the blinding lights of cellphones and the annoying buzzes signaling yet another text or notification.

As an avid moviegoer, I am passionate about preserving that unique cinematic experience. I believe that to get audiences back and ensure everyone can enjoy the magic of the movies, we must address one of the biggest interruptions - cellphones in cinema auditoriums. The unspoken understanding once was to switch off our devices to focus on the unfolding story on the screen. Nowadays, the hypnotic lure of digital distractions robs viewers of their full immersion.

The solution is simple but effective: Ban the use of cellphones within cinema auditoriums during the movie. Patrons should be encouraged to use their phones in the lobby and during ads and previews, but when the movie begins, phones must be turned off. Not put to sleep or  Merely Silenced. Implement a five-minute long Public Service Announcement (PSA) before the movie begins, clearly stating this policy. Any individual caught using a phone during the movie should be escorted out, restoring the experience for others, and repeat offenders should face a ban.

The importance of this action extends beyond mere annoyance. Constant phone interruptions adversely affect our attention spans and hinder the neuroplasticity of our brains. The immersive environment of a movie theater is an opportunity to retrain our minds to focus and be present. This action will not only enhance our enjoyment but also contribute to the restoration of our collective attention spans.
