Walking along Waterkant Road in Durban North has become a hazardous affair for me and my fellow pedestrians. Every day, as I navigate the cracked tar and loose sand on the footpath, I am forced to walk on the road, just inches away from the speeding vehicles—a risk that no one should have to take simply to go about their daily lives.

The incomplete roadwork on Waterkant Road and the subsequent neglect of the pedestrian pavement is not just a minor inconvenience; it's a glaring public safety issue. In its current state, the pavement poses significant dangers to all, especially to children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities who might find it even more challenging to use the road safely. Not to mention the damages it's done to citizens vehicles. 

The hazardous condition of this pedestrian pavement is exacerbated during inclement weather when the sand and broken tar become slippery. It is only a matter of time before an unsuspecting pedestrian gets hurt, or worse. This is a plea for immediate action to avert a potential tragedy.

According to city planning and public works standards, roads and pavements must be maintained in a condition that is safe and accessible to everyone. The shocking state of Waterkant Road does not meet these standards, making it imperative for the local government and the relevant authorities to prioritize its completion and repair.

I urge the Durban North municipal authorities to allocate the necessary resources and attention to comprehensively complete the roadwork on Waterkant Road. This includes ensuring that the pedestrian pavements are repaired and properly maintained. Such an endeavor is not only crucial for the safety of the residents but also enhances the overall infrastructure and aesthetic appeal of our community.
