Good Ground Park created 10 years ago, is a 36 acre greenspace with a natural amphitheater, playgrounds, walking trails and comfort facilities located just north of the central business district in Hampton Bays. Original plans called for a wide, attractive Gateway entrance to provide direct accessibility and visibility to Main Street. The original Gateway entrance was scrapped when plans to purchase the required property fell apart; leaving the park without a prominent connection to the center of town. Today, the park is not visible from Main Street and it’s not a feature of our downtown landscape.

The property envisioned for the Gateway entrance, is currently owned by the Hampton Bays Fire District and has just been approved for public sale. We ask you to join with us in urging the Town to honor its original commitments to purchase the property (#84 West Montauk Highway) and  build a highly visible, landscaped Gateway entrance that visibly extends the park into the center of town. 

This isn't just about aesthetic improvement; it's about community development, economic development, and environmental conservation. Open, accessible, green spaces boost local economies by attracting businesses, increasing property values,  and enhancing tourism.  A vibrant  entrance to the park would serve as an ideal gathering spot for local events, farmer's markets, and cultural festivals. It would be central feature of our main street, drawing both visitors and residents, while breathing new life into our town center.

With your support we hope to convince the Town Board to prioritize purchasing this property and creating a transformative Gateway to our spectacular park. It would ensure that Hampton Bays remains a thriving community of residents and visitors. Alternatives to the Town purchasing the property are unclear. Development plans are on the horizon that would absorb the property into planned, mixed  business and residential communities that would dominate the character of the town center.
