Complete NM-170 Road Construction at the State Line

The Issue

I've lived in this region for nearly 40 years and have driven this road thousands, if not tens of thousands of times. The uncompleted road construction at the state line of NM/CO on NM-170 is dangerous and going to result in a fatality if not completed. The sign indicating a "bump" in the road is located far too close to the large trench NMDOT left behind for anyone unfamiliar to slow down. This road hazard will result in someone being seriously injured or killed.

NM-170 has recently proven to be dangerous already, with many recent serious accidents and fatalities. While NMDOT may believe that leaving a gaping trench in the road will slow traffic down, they have set up a trap for the various tourists who travel this road to be killed. We have seen too many deaths on this road to allow this to continue. This is especially true when we expect our taxpayer dollars to go toward a COMPLETED JOB, not a trench left in the road which has been really rough on our vehicles at the very least.

As taxpayers, we must stand up and demand to know where our tax dollars are going. For what we pay, this simple job should be FINISHED. Rather, a temporary sign has been left out, to remain permanent until it is stolen, and NMDOT will have blood on their hands.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) must prioritize completing this section of NM-170 immediately before it claims lives. Please sign this petition to urge NMDOT to take swift action and ensure our community's safety.

This area is too dangerous for me to park a car and take pictures of unless it is a very particular time of day, and even then, it's on a blind corner. I'm not risking my life for pictures. If any community members have pictures, please upload them to the La Plata Community FB page and I will add them to this petition.

Step up, New Mexico Department of Transportation. If you don't care about the cost of human life, consider the financial cost of causing a family of four their lives.
