Complete and restore Parade Ground Skatepark in Dehradun
The Issue
In 2024, our city’s youth were promised an official skatepark inside Parade Ground. We were told to train for the National Games, given 3D designs, and assured that public funds had been sanctioned for a dedicated training facility. Believing in this vision, young athletes spent months training relentlessly across rough roads and parking lots.
However, this dream was cruelly interrupted. The envisioned skatepark remains largely incomplete, with construction halted abruptly after just 10% completion. The space is unusable and filled with rubble, far from the inspirational arena we were promised. This incomplete skatepark not only dashed the hopes of many young athletes but also highlighted a glaring oversight in the commitment of our civic leaders.
- Excluded and Ignored: Skateboarding was silently removed from the event roster, and communication from the association stopped entirely.
- Locked Out of Public Space: With the park abandoned, athletes attempted to practice on the adjacent public rink floor. They were evicted by security and told they must pay a ₹3,000 annual fee to step foot on government-built ground.
- Misuse and Damage: While local youth are locked out, the specialized rink floor has been commercially rented out to private academies for cricket, basketball, and handball—leaving the surface cracked and damaged by heavy equipment.
The failure to complete the Parade Ground Skatepark reflects poorly on the administrative promises and raises questions about the allocation and use of public funds that were intended specifically for this project.
