Compel the Local Authority to Repair Residential Drains to Prevent Basement Flooding
Compel the Local Authority to Repair Residential Drains to Prevent Basement Flooding
The Issue
My humble home lies like many others lining our friendly neighborhood streets; however, the seemingly innocuous drainage system in front of our houses has become a menace, causing recurrent and devastating water damage to our basements. The frequency of these flooding incidents has escalated to an alarming rate, and action is now more than warranted. Speaking only for the personal losses that I alone have endured, over $10,000 in damages has resulted from these floods, impacting my carpets, hot water heaters, and irreplaceable personal items.
This is not an isolated issue. Many neighbors share my plight. Data from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) reveals that floods are the most common and costly natural disaster in the U.S. Homeowners' insurance does not typically cover basement flooding, leaving us the burden of these avoidable expenses.
We urgently call upon our local authority to swiftly repair the residential drains that are purposefully designed to direct water away, not into, our homes. The current condition of these drains is endangering the infrastructure of our homes and creating undue financial strain for residents. Communities deserve adequate drainage systems that work effectively to protect our homes from preventable damage.
