Compel Spain Park High School to offer Latin 3, Latin 4 and AP courses

The Issue

When I was prevented from taking Latin AP, it was a significant setback in my academic journey. Many Freshmen signed up for Latin 1, creating a higher demand for beginner courses and leaving upper-level Latin students without the opportunity to further pursue their studies. This limitation not only hinders individual learning paths but stifles the aspirations of students who are eager to dive deeper into classical studies.

At Spain Park High School, Latin has established itself as an intriguing and rewarding language that stimulates minds and offers an enriching perspective on history, culture, and language. The absence of Latin 3, Latin 4, and AP Latin courses limits students’ growth, passion, and potential. Advanced Latin courses not only prepare students for college-level work but also provide a comprehensive understanding of ancient texts, enhancing critical thinking and analytical skills.

According to numerous educational studies, learning Latin contributes significantly to vocabulary skills, reading comprehension, and even mathematics. A 2016 study by the University of London revealed students who studied Latin scored significantly higher in language arts and math compared to their peers who did not. Expanding the Latin curriculum at Spain Park High School can only benefit the student body intellectually and academically.

By offering Latin 3, Latin 4, and AP Latin, the school can foster an inclusive environment where students can pursue their academic interests without restrictions. These courses not only enhance college applications but also create more well-rounded individuals ready to engage the world with a broader cultural perspective.

Implementing these advanced courses requires commitment, but the benefits they bring to students and the school are invaluable. We urge Spain Park High School to prioritize the intellectual growth of its students over scheduling constraints and ensure all students have the opportunity to pursue Latin studies to the fullest.

Please sign this petition to show your support for the enrichment of our education system and give students the chance to excel in their Latin studies. Let's encourage Spain Park High School to offer Latin 3, Latin 4, and AP Latin for the benefit of current and future learners.
